Costa del Sol Today
Costa del Sol Today
Spain’s southern coast is beautiful – especially if you’re from some cold, northern country with endless clouds and rain, and is one of the most popular tourist destinations on Earth! Stretching roughly 350km from Tarifa in the west to Almeria in the east, the Costa del Sol caters for all ages, all nationalities and all tastes!
With such a amazing number of attractions and facilities, there is something for everyone to enjoy. It’s great for kids too!
Sunshine, Beaches, Fun!
With almost all-year sunny weather, miles and miles of beautiful beaches and a real focus on tourism, the Costa del Sol keeps tourists from all over the world coming back year on year! Places such as Sitio de Calahonda, Mijas Pueblo, Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Marbella, Puerto Banús, San Pedro de Alcántara, Nueva Andalucía and Estepona.
One of the most popular travel destinations in Europe, the Costa is enjoys an enviable location, running along Spain’s southern coast.
This coast is well known for its perfect blue flag beaches and a simply splendid climate with an average of over 300 days of sunshine each year. 300 days! Rain is so rare, the locals look forward to it!
The Costa boasts a unique, laid-back atmosphere, mostly coming from the very welcoming Spanish locals. Considering the number of nationalities and the number of languages and accents spoken here, their patience is absolutely worth mentioning!
A Magnificent History
It’s not all sun, sea and sangria – although there’s lots of that! This part of Andalucia has been important for thousands of years and it still shows! If you’ve already visited, you may have seen the towers along the coast, these are watchtowers, defending the Iberian Peninsula against attacks from the Barbery pirates on the other side of the Mediterranean. There are around 100 of these defensive towers along Spain’s southern coast, some Moorish, some Christian, some dating back as far as the tenth century.
Sohail Castle in Fuengirola is another outstanding example of the Costa’s history and Málaga drips with culture and history.
It’s only recently – since the early 1960s – that the Costa has been a tourist ‘mecca’, with the name being invented precisely to attract tourism. (I can’t prove this, but…) The original name for the Costa del Sol was “Costa del Viento”, “The Windy Coast”. Since that well-branded expansion, the population and diversity of the coast has exploded.
Diverse & Flourishing Wildlife
Most visitors will see the more built up areas, some of which can be a little ugly – concrete boxes built by aggressive developers – but the region is absolutely covered with magnificent and varied plant life, palm trees, fir forests, large open shrublands with one of the most florally diverse regions in the world. Yes, the world!
If nature and its splendour is your thing, it can often be little more than a short drive (even a walk in some areas, the back of La Cala, for example) away from the coast to find lavender, myrtle, and laurel, in the beautiful ‘campo’ areas of the Montes de Málaga foothills.
Eat, Drink, be Merry!
Everyone knows about the ‘Mediterranean cuisine’ and just how healthy the fresh fish, cured meats & cheeses and lashings of locally produced olive oil can be. Not just healthy, but absolutely mouth-watering! I recommend Serrano Ham, Manchego Cheese, some olives and a bottle of Ribera del Duero for a cracking afternoon in the sunshine.
Nightlife along the coast will suit everyone with a penchant for staying out late, eating, drinking and generally making merry!
For some real eating, drinking and being merry, El Oceano is a great place for a party. Not cheap, but good. If you’re in to sun bathing, they’ve a great terrace and pool.
Golf
Can’t forget the golf! An unofficial name for this part of the world is The Costa del Golf. With over 70 courses between Torre del Mar and Sotogrande, the Costa del Sol has the largest concentration of quality courses anywhere in Europe. Since golf was introduced here – and with the explosion in tourism – popularity has grown so much that the Costa del Sol now boasts being one of the world’s top golf destinations. See the list of golf courses on the Costa del Sol.
The Costa del Sol
Beautiful and historic ‘White Towns’, modern bustling cities, fun beachfront tourist towns, the Costa del Sol has something to offer every visitor. Here we show you some of the more popular places to visit, but also some of the more ‘off the beaten track’ places to find something a little different. Find out which one(s) will bring most delight!

Constitution Sqaure is really good. There’s a place at one end to get wine and tapas and watch the world go by. Its my favourite part.
